Midwestern States
The March 1913 flood that struck the Midwestern United States wreaked havoc on the Great Miami River watershed of southwestern Ohio, killing more than 700 people. At that time Dayton, Ohio was a major technology center of the United States, and its citizens elected to construct the first integrated system of modern flood control, which became a blueprint for the rest of the world.
